The notice that's easy to skim past
A Product Change Notice (PCN) or End-of-Life (EOL) notice is one of the least exciting emails a procurement or design engineer receives — and one of the most consequential to ignore. Unlike a semiconductor shortage that shows up in the news, a connector going end-of-life is a quiet, manufacturer-initiated event. If nobody on the design or purchasing side actually reads the notice carefully, the first sign of trouble is often a distributor quote coming back with no stock and no lead time — months after the window to act cheaply had already closed.
This guide covers what these notices actually contain, the handful of dates that matter more than the rest of the document, and a practical checklist for what to do in the first week after one lands in your inbox. PCN vs. EOL notice: not the same thing
A Product Change Notice is the broader category. Manufacturers issue a PCN for any material change to a part that could affect form, fit, function, or reliability — a material substitution (e.g., a plating change), a manufacturing process or factory relocation, a packaging change, or a full discontinuation. Most PCNs a design engineer receives are not about a part disappearing; they're about something changing under the hood that may or may not matter for a given application.
An EOL notice is a specific type of PCN: the manufacturer announcing that a part is being discontinued entirely. This is the one that actually requires a sourcing decision, and it's usually structured somewhat differently from a routine change notice — built specifically around a small number of key dates and a stated (or absent) replacement recommendation.
Some manufacturers, particularly larger ones, structure their notices in a format similar in spirit to JEDEC's JESD48 Product/Process Change Notification standard (originally written for semiconductors, but the same "what changed, why, and by when" structure is common practice well beyond that industry). Smaller or regional connector manufacturers are far less standardized — the same information may be buried in a PDF, a distributor bulletin, or a one-line email, so don't assume every notice will look alike.
The fields that actually matter
Strip away the boilerplate and a real EOL notice is built around a handful of facts:
Affected part number(s). Read this closely — a notice may cover a whole series (all pitches, all pin counts) or just specific variants (a particular plating option, a particular pin count). Don't assume the whole family is dying because one line item is.
Reason for discontinuation. Worth noting for risk-scoring purposes: "declining demand" reads differently than "raw material no longer available" or "factory closure," even though the practical response (find a replacement) is often the same either way.
Last Time Buy (LTB) date. The final date the manufacturer will accept a purchase order for the part. This is the number that actually matters for a lifetime-buy decision — not the notification date.
Last Ship Date (LSD). The final date the manufacturer will physically ship the part, typically some weeks-to-months after LTB to allow the last production run to be built and shipped. A part can still show as "in stock" at a distributor after LSD has passed — that's just remaining channel inventory, not an indication the part is still being made.
Recommended replacement or cross-reference (if offered). When a manufacturer names its own suggested second-sourced replacement, that's usually the most reliable option available, since it comes from the party with full visibility into the original part's internal tolerances — but "recommended by the manufacturer" still isn't the same as "verified for your specific application." Treat it as a strong lead, not a final answer.
The gap between notification and Last Time Buy is often shorter than people assume
There's no universal rule here — notice periods vary widely by manufacturer size, part volume, and reason for discontinuation — but it's a common and costly mistake to assume every EOL notice comes with a comfortable 12-month runway. Some do. Others give a matter of weeks, particularly for lower-volume or older parts where the manufacturer has limited incentive to extend the window. The practical lesson: treat the LTB date as fixed the moment you see it, rather than assuming there will be time to "get to it later."
What to actually do in the first week
Confirm which of your active BOMs are affected, not just whether you personally recognize the part number. Calculate total remaining demand across every committed build, not just the next one, before deciding whether a lifetime/bridge buy makes sense versus qualifying a replacement now.
Check for a manufacturer-recommended replacement first, and if one exists, verify it yourself against your actual application — mechanical fit, electrical ratings, and any application-specific factor (vibration, temperature, sealing) the manufacturer's general recommendation may not have accounted for.

Where these notices actually show up
Relying on catching a single email from one manufacturer is a weak strategy on its own. In practice, most sourcing teams layer a few channels:
Distributor EOL/BOM monitoring services — Digi-Key, Mouser, Arrow, and Avnet all offer some form of BOM upload/monitoring that flags EOL and PCN status against your actual parts list, which catches notices even if you're not on a given manufacturer's own mailing list.
The manufacturer's own PCN notification portal or mailing list, if one exists — usually opt-in and part-number- or series-specific.
Third-party obsolescence-monitoring / BOM-management tools, more common at larger organizations managing thousands of line items, less commonly justified for smaller shops but worth knowing exist.
None of these are a substitute for the underlying design-level mitigation — a cross-compatible footprint protects you even if every monitoring channel above fails to catch a notice in time. An EOL notice is a countdown, not a suggestion.
